"The Ballad of Persse O’Reilly" by James Joyce. Dance Remix Version!

This poem, written with musical notation, appears in Finnegans Wake. It is a dazzling piece of verse—something only Joyce could have written.

Back in 2000, a friend of mine who was an English teacher gave me a thick Penguin Books edition of Finnegans Wake along with a commentary. However, faced with Joyce’s genius of a writing style, I quickly gave up and left it untouched for years.

Then, after I started recording readings, I happened to rediscover this bizarre book on my shelf. Once I picked it up, for some reason, I began reading it aloud. That was the end of it—I was completely captivated by the musicality of its rhymes. Over a long period, I managed to read through the whole thing, though it was more than ten years ago. I didn’t fully grasp its meaning at the time, but looking back, that moment was an omen of my future in English recitations.

This ballad is a masterpiece, where Joyce’s cynical humor narrates the downfall of tyrants and invaders. Even today, in an era where tone-deaf speeches about a “Happy Japan” echo in vain, its message remains strikingly relevant.

　ジェイムズ・ジョイス作「パース・オライリーのバラード」。そのダンス・リミックス！

　『フィネガンス・ウェイク』の中に、楽譜付きで書かれている詩。ジョイス独特の、というか、彼にしか書けない、目の眩むような韻文。２０００年、英語教師をやっている友からペンギン・ブックの分厚い本と解説書を頂いていたのだが、ジョイスの天才（天災？）的文体にギブアップして、長らく打っちゃっていた。ところが、朗読を始めるようになり、ふと書棚にその奇書を見つけて手に取ったが最後、何を思ったか、とにかく声に出して読み始めてみると、その音楽的語韻に取り憑かれ、長い月日をかけて読破していたのだった。もう十数年前のことだ。意味を完全に理解したわけではなかったが、それから幾年後の英語朗読を予感させる事件！であった、と今にして思う。

　このバラードは、権力者、侵略者の成れの果てをジョイスのシニカルなユーモアによって朗誦されている。「楽しい日本」などとピント外れな演説がむなしく響く現代にも、充分過ぎるくらい通じる傑作。日本語字幕版もご用意いたしましたので、ご視聴頂けると幸いです。
