O Captain! My Captain!by Walt Whitman Recitation & Music
by POETAQ

This July 4 marks the 250th anniversary of American independence. To commemorate the occasion, I recited Walt Whitman’s “O Captain! My Captain!” over a pop beat. I set this pessimistic poem to a bright musical style—one that, paradoxically, makes its pessimism feel even deeper. Yes, we live in a difficult world. But unless we wish for our own self-destruction, we have no choice but to cling somehow to hope and keep on living. Thank you, Whitman!

【ロマン派詩人・キーツの皮肉】「Modern Love」(John Keats / 1848)/The Irony of the Romantic Poet Keats — “Modern Love” (John Keats / 1848)

According to AI, John Keats was “one of the major poets of early nineteenth-century English Romanticism” and was known for writing less about political and social themes than about “beauty, love, sensation, death, transience, and the imagination.”

Being somewhat contrary by nature, I went looking for a more satirical side of Keats and came across a poem that made me think, “Could this be it?” That poem was “Modern Love.”

I was immediately drawn to its irony, which, to my mind, is every bit as sharp as David Bowie’s song of the same title, and decided to make a lyric video for it.

I hope the beaver at the end brings a wry smile to your face.
